Hi {name}

Last time I wrote from Poland where ODT Sonas Rovatio pulled off a win in the CIC** with Nikos not far behind him. I was extremely pleased with both horses who now head to the Advanced class at Aston Le Walls this weekend. ODT Sonas Rovatio was then my horse of choice for the Bolesworth Classic Eventer’s class last week which is similar to the Eventer’s Challenge that runs at Hickstead each year. He jumped brilliantly over the show jumps and solid fences, but unfortunately just rolled a pole near the end of the course which cost him the win with the honours going to show jumper Anthony Condon.

Looking back, I have been to a few mid week events including Stonar School which turned out to be a very successful two days for me and the team as well as a very enjoyable and friendly event. We had the babies doing BE100 where Last Resort got his first win. I also had two winners in the Novice sections with Arctic Mouse and Whata Perk taking their respective sections. Next stop was Aske which provided another few good wins; on Belmont Virlandie, who is a new horse owned by Victoria Hazeldine, and on ODT Ghareeb who added another red rosette to his collection. Mayhem III had his first run for a few weeks as well, jumping a double clear with just a few time faults to add.

I then went to Shipton Moyne with the babies where Last Resort and Godoh Jurisprudence (a very hard name to try and say let alone spell) both won their sections. Next came Barbury where I was disappointed not to have a horse in the CIC*** in the end. I still went on the Saturday and Arctic Mouse and Gorsehill Star both finished third in their Novice sections, completing on their dressage scores. I then went along to the Festival of the Horse at Stoneleigh on the Sunday to watch, and present the prizes to the Young Riders doing this year’s Express Eventing class. It was a great day of action and I hope it will back running for the senior riders again soon!

Following Barbury came the news of the GB team selection for the World Championships where I was named as one of the non-travelling reserves for the WEG with Ashdale Cruise Master. I’m obviously very disappointed not to have been included in the team because I believe we have done enough to show that we are a successful partnership with a proven record in international competitions. Hopefully we can prove to the selectors that they have made a mistake in overlooking Splash.

Carden Imp continued his good form with an Intermediate win at Tweseldown – he went really well! Kath and I left the yard shortly after 4am to get there on time, but we ended up missing my first two dressage times due to being stuck in traffic for a couple of hours, frustratingly just 15 miles from the event. The organisers were very helpful when we did eventually arrive, and we even managed to finish the day ahead of schedule!

Last week I was competing at Upton House mid week where ODT Top Dollar scored his first win. He is a very classy five year old by Puissance who I have high hopes for in the future. We have had him since he was a real baby so it’s very exciting to finally have him winning at events! Following a morning there I had to go straight to the Bolesworth Castle Showjumping Classic launch where I was speaking in the late afternoon. It turned into quite a nice quiet evening and I was back to the show the next morning to compete – also jumping a couple of horses against the professional show jumpers which was quite nerve wracking, some of the jumps looked pretty scary to me! I managed a few good rounds in the morning before we got on to the Eventer’s Challenge class.

My new range ‘Townend Online’ sponsored one of the show jumping classes at the show and we had a stall there as well, stocking all of the products that are on the website www.townendonline.com The leather range is now back in stock in all sizes and colours (we sold a lot of stock quicker than we imagined for the first batch) which is great news.

Last weekend we made the very long annual trip over to Great Witchingham, which means a start of 1.30am – fortunately it was well worth it with Jeepers Creepers winning the Intermediate class and Belmont Virlandie and Nikos coming second in their sections.

This week I’ve been busy riding at home, going to the gallops and to Somerford Park to XC and SJ school a few. This weekend we are at Aston-Le-Walls from Friday through to Sunday with both Advanced and Novice horses entered. I’ve also had a film crew on the yard who wanted to ask me a few questions ahead of this year’s Burghley. They took a few shots with the grey boys in the background which I hope will come out well on tape. The footage will be used for any press or TV who want to use it around the time of Burghley.

Remember to enter this month’s member’s competition which you can find in the member’s area of the website. This month you could win a load of prizes from me including a signed numnah and T-shirt and I will see what else I can find to give away as part of the prize!

Good Luck!

Hi {name}

I’m writing this from Strzegom, Poland where I have 3 horses in the different classes. It’s pretty hot out here, as I believe it is back home. I have been on the road quite a lot since I last wrote, with Tattersalls over in Ireland and then a couple of weeks at home before Luhmuhlen and then here. I’m quite looking forward to spending some more time back at the yard next week although the one day event schedule is also looking pretty busy for the next few weeks. The team at home have been busy decorating and re-doing the tack room whilst we have been away, which I am looking forward to seeing on Monday.

Casting my mind back to Brigstock, I had a hectic return to competition following on from my rest period after Kentucky. I was feeling pretty sore after riding the first couple but then the more I did the easier it seemed to get. I was fortunate enough to have a few good results in those first 3 days back and then also at Tattersalls which followed, another fantastic result with Ashdale Cruise Master winning the CIC***W in fine style.

Ashdale Cruise Master then headed to Luhmuhlen. For us as a pair to qualify for selection for the WEG later in the year, we have to have completed a three day event together at that level. The decision to head there paid off well and Splash felt superb in the Dressage and cross country. We were a little unlucky in the show jumping but we still managed to achieve Splash’s best result to date with a 5th placing at 4*. Carousel Quest was very unlucky and seemed to trip coming into one of the final fences on the cross country, resulting in elimination for him and quite a sore nose from bashing it on the fence. Both these greys have come home absolutely fine and will now have a short holiday before coming back in to work to prepare for their next events.

One of my brilliant sponsors Lincoln held a Jump Cross competition on Tuesday which I competed in before flying out here. It was a fantastic day of competition and all who attended were well looked after with a delicious lunch and a lovely atmosphere. It was not quite my day competition wise but I was pleased with how my still relatively novice horses both went.

Townend online is now stocking a full range of Lincoln products – check out www.townenndonline.co.uk – as well as now having Point Two air jackets available and of course my leather range which is flying off the shelves.

I’ve also recently got a brilliant new Subaru car which I am sure many of you will have already seen on the website. It’s a Forester like I had before and really liked, just slightly newer and in a different colour. It is white with the union jack and my name on the sides so you won’t be able to miss me now at all the events!

This month’s member’s competition is still open, but be quick! This month you are in with the chance of winning some Lincoln Omega Gold rapeseed oil which is a great product for your horse. Well done to Sharon Smith who was the May competition winner, taking home the Toggi Newmarket jacket.

Looking ahead, I have two horses now qualified for the Gatcombe Novice Championships in Carden Imp and Jeepers Creepers. I’m also going to be competing in the all new eventer’s challenge at the Bolesworth show in nearby Cheshire in a couple of weeks. I am not sure which horse to take yet; I think I will see who is going well closer to the time!

Right I had better go and walk the course!

Because we were taking different horses to each event we decided to drive back home to swap over all the horses and the gear. The lorry is full to bursting as we have to take our own feed, haylage, rugs, tack and bandages as well as all the usual stuff – I had to resort to travelling some bags of the horses gear in the bathroom in the living as it was the only place we had any space!

When we travel the horses we have to stop to water them every few hours so that they don’t get dehydrayed. If they get hot I take take their rugs off and keep the windows open as it can be a long time in the lorry for them. Luckily they all travel very well and as long as they have got a haynet they are happy. On the ferry we just drop the ramp to let the air in to the back and I am not sure the horses even know where they are!

I have packed extra fly rugs for Poland for the horses to wear all of the time as the flies are quite bad here. Luckily we haven’t got any chestnut horses with us this year as the Polish flies seem to find them especially tasty!

Back home, we are currently having the tack room painted and re-done with some very smart looking saddle racks. It will be great when it is finished and much better for keeping all the saddles stored nicely. Meanwhile I’m looking forward to a nice lie in when we get home after all the early mornings that come with big events, preparing the horses for the trot ups and then the late nights icing their legs after the cross country.

It was great to get back out with the younger horses as it can be very rewarding for me to see the horses we have been working with since they were broken actually competing. I really like Stormin Norman, a young grey novice horse that is really sweet to handle and lovely to watch.

We have got a young lad called James on work experience here at the moment. It’s always very helpful to have an extra pair of hands around to get things done: James is very good at grooming the horses, cleaning tack (although I am sure he is probably sick of it by now) and helping out around the ever busy yard.

The farriers have been here this morning to shoe a few horses and the vet is about to arrive to do some vaccinations so it’s all go, as always! I’ve finished packing the lorry for Tattersalls – I have a very long list of things to remember to pack, including the extra things I have to take abroad and to the bigger events such as tape to strap the horses shoes on with for the XC, feed and supplements, flags to sew on to the numnahs, spare shoes etc, and it is obviously very important that I dont forget anything!

It is so nice to be home, it has been a long couple of weeks since the horses and I left for Kentucky. We were lucky enough to fly out before the Volcanic ash caused all the flight trouble – I thought at one point I was going to have to take up the reins from Oliver and start walking the cross country course to ride the horses myself!

I was very relieved when Oliver finally arrived at the event. We had both the horses on the Friday for dressage which meant that Oliver had an extra day to ride them both which was good. Rastus (ODT Master Rose) did a very good test for his first 4* and Splash (Ashdale Cruise Master) also did a very good test. It started raining very heavily before the cross country which meant that the times were brought forward to try and avoid the expected storms. I thought I was going to America to get away from the bad weather!

Rastus was again very good around the XC and finished looking and feeling very well. He was wondering what was going on on the Sunday – I think he was looking forward to the trot up and show jumping! I then had a very scary afternoon with Oliver obviously taking a very nasty fall on Splash. I got to Splash as quickly as I could and he was checked over by the vets and seemed to be OK, just a bit muddy, so I took him back to the stables to wash off.

It was very worrying not knowing what was going on with Oliver and I was again very relieved to see him the following day. After the event had finished, the horses and grooms stayed overnight at Kentucky before travelling to quarantine on the Tuesday for what was meant to be a Wednesday flight. Unfortunately we came across more flight trouble and were initially delayed 12 hours due to the back log from the Volcano and then a further 6 hours due to a problem with the plane door! The horses coped with everything brilliantly and flew home without any trouble at all.

Once back in the UK the trouble continiued as we had to wait for 2 hours for the trunks to be found from the plane and then we hit Friday afternoon traffic which made our trip home even longer. The horses are now back in their own stables and fields relaxing and I am also trying to recover!
